How to Choose a Mask
Better Masks
Look for the following in a mask:
- A mask should have 3 layers of cotton with a pocket for a polypropylene filter insert. Single/double layer masks will not provide enough filtration.
- The mask should fit snugly around your face. There should be no gaps around the nose bridge, sides of the face or under the chin.
- Buy a mask with adjustable earloops.
- DO NOT buy a mask with a filtration valve. Filtration valves let out air.
- For children, an around-the-head design can help prevent chaffing of ears from the elastic loops.
- With prolonged use, elastic loops can chaff the ears. An earsaver is a plastic band that goes on the back of the head, on which elastic loops can be hooked. This can help take pressure off the ears. Earsavers can be crocheted bands with buttons or 3-D printed plastic.
